Hi there!
Grand Marais has beaches, and one of them is at Bayshore Park!
So Grand Marais MI is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
It can also be considered a gateway town of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
Grand Marais is the smaller gateway town which is near the Pictured Rocks sand dunes. The other “bigger” gateway town is Munising near the Pictured Rocks cliffs.
So, if you’re driving to Pictured Rocks from the eastern Upper Peninsula, you can choose to pass through Grand Marais if you want to take the slow scenic route to get to Pictured Rocks.
And if you do, you may also consider making a stop at Bayshore Park as you are driving through Grand Marais!
This is a small little park that sits right on West Bay, which is a part of Lake Superior.
There is also a small sandy beach here.

And, there also might be a food truck near Bayshore Park! So you can make this a food stop too.

Whether you buy from the food truck or you have your own picnic lunch, you can eat at the picnic tables that overlooks Lake Superior!
Eat with grand lake views!

A little bit more below about making Grand Marais a part of your drive to Pictured Rocks!
⚓
Stopping by Grand Marais on your drive to Pictured Rocks
If you are coming from any of these points of interest in the eastern part of the Upper Peninsula, you may consider entering Pictured Rocks from Grand Marais instead of Munising:
- Whitefish Point
- Crisp Point
- Tahquamenon Falls State Park
- More things to do in the eastern Upper Peninsula
Depending on the individual destination within Pictured Rocks that you plug into google maps, it may take you through Grand Marais, or it may have you bypass Grand Marais and enter through Munising.
You may consider plugging into google maps Sable Falls or Log Slide Overlook, and you will likely be directed to drive through Grand Marais.
Both of these spots are located on the Grand Marais side of Pictured Rocks and are worthy stops within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

If you are looking for a further slow scenic route, then you may also consider driving along the Grand Marais Truck Trail to get to Grand Marais!
And so…
Getting to Bayshore Park
Grand Marais is not that big. Bayshore Park is located right near the main “town” area of Grand Marais.
You can also find Bayshore Park on google maps to get you there too.
You’ll likely have at least a little data signal when you’re in Grand Marais, but you may not have data on your way to Grand Marais.
So it could be a good idea to download offline google maps before you go. (It’s free.)
And now…
A bit of what you’ll see at Bayshore Park of Grand Marais MI!
There is free parking at Bayshore Park. You’ll see parking spots when you approach.

Then, you can get out of the car and take in the views of West Bay and Lake Superior from above!

Maybe you will see a seaplane (lakeplane?!) taking off!

Down below, there’s a playground.

There’s also a bathroom down below.
So you can make this a Grand Marais bathroom stop that comes with views too!

If you want to go down to sea level, you’ll take the stairs down, and this will also take you to the beach.
Take care when swimming!
There are no lifeguards.

On the top level (without taking the stairs) is where you’ll find the picnic tables. So you’ll see this right near the parking.

Grand Marais food truck
And then when you’re parking for Bayshore Park, you may also see the Grand Marais food truck aka Fired U.P. food truck! Bring cash if you want to eat here!

Fired U.P. menu, prices, and hours may change! Photos from summer 2020.
And that’s a bit of what to see around a small beach park in Grand Marais!
Next, head to the Grand Marais Harbor lighthouse!
See what to do in Pictured Rocks near Grand Marais!
Top things to do around the UP:
- Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
- Porcupine Mountains State Park
- Tahquamenon Falls State Park
- Sugarloaf Mountain
- Kitch-iti-kipi bubbling big spring
