ALOHA!
So the Nakalele Blowhole is in a part of West Maui that fewer tourists venture too.
That’s not to say that you’ll be the only one at the Nakalele Blowhole when you make a visit there.
The Nakalele Blowhole is THE famous blowhole on Maui, so chances are there will be others there!
But there will probably be less crowds than you’re used to if you’re coming from Kaanapali or from Wailea for example!

👆 Parking for the Nakalele Blowhole is directly along the side of the main road.

First…
The boring safety message about the Nakalele Blowhole!

The Nakalele Blowhole is best experienced seeing them from a bit of a distance.
Not only does the blowhole shoot up water at extremely powerful speeds, but the area surrounding the blowhole can also become dangerous.
There have been times where waves have unexpectedly washed over the area.
So it’s good to stay away from the edge, and the further away you are can be better!

More below about what it looks like to start the trail to the Nakalele Blowhole!
🌴
Okay, so now…
Finding the trail to get closer to the Nakalele Blowhole
There is Nakalele Blowhole on google maps so you can use that to get to the general area.
You may not get data service as you get closer so it can be good to download the free offline google maps. Even if you don’t get data, your GPS locator will likely work.
You can keep an eye on the GPS and map to know when you’re getting close.

The trail to the blowhole can be found directly off the main road (Kahekili Highway). There is an obvious parking area right off the main road as well. Well it’s a big patch of dirt. If you’re going during the day, you’ll probably see other cars parked so you’ll know there’s something around!

When I went in January 2020, there was a small snack stand (Mamalei’s), along with a coconut man selling coconuts from the back of his truck.
Both are mobile so they may not always be there, but in normal times it seems like they are regulars there!
According to Mamalei’s website, they are there Monday through Saturday 9am to 5pm. (So they aren’t there Sundays.)
They sell Hawaii specialty cookies like macademia nut cookies and coconut cookies.

So once at the parking area, if Mamalei’s is there, you’ll see a sign that points you in the direction of the trail will take you down to the coast!
If Mamalei’s is not there, you can look for a trail and it won’t be too difficult to spot.

You have parked high above on a cliff basically, so you’ll be coming from a higher point.
It will start off as a dirt trail, but then it becomes a very rocky trail.
This means that it does require walking over some rocks to get down closer to sea level.
So it can be better to wear some sort of shoes and/or footwear with tougher soles (instead of thin flip flops) if you’re planning on hiking down to get closer to the Nakalele blowhole.

And that’s a bit about how to get to the Nakalele blowhole!
And then you can keep driving onwards for a beautiful West Maui drive!
