1. Driving through Grand Teton National Park on Teton Park Road

Best things to do in Grand Teton National Park: Teton Park Road, 42 mile grand teton scenic loop drive. wyoming travel blog

After you have officially entered Grand Teton National Park, you will soon start to drive with views of the Teton mountain range, if you didn’t already see it while you were driving towards Grand Teton National Park!

👆 Driving through Bridger-Teton National Forest towards Grand Teton National Park! Do you see the silhouette of the Tetons?!

The main road through Grand Teton National Park is the 42-mile Grand Teton Scenic Loop Drive.

Teton Park Road is basically one half of the Grand Teton scenic loop drive.

Once you have entered Grand Teton National Park, at some point, you will basically end up on the Grand Teton Scenic Loop Drive.

This scenic loop drive basically has 2 sides:

  • There’s the western side that’s the “inner” side is the closest to the Tetons. This is Teton Park Road.
  • There’s the eastern side that’s the “outer” side that’s further away from the Tetons but will still give you amazing views. This is US-26/89/191.

There are a few entry spots for Grand Teton National Park. Which one you enter from really is just about where you are coming from.

If you are driving to Teton Park Road from the south and from Jackson Hole, then you’ll likely entry through the Moose entry station in Moose WY. (map)

If you are driving from the east to Grand Teton National Park, then you’ll likely enter through the Moran entry station in Moran WY. (map) This would also be a drive through Shoshone National Forest and Bridger-Teton National Forest to get to Grand Teton National Park. This can be the driving route if you are driving from Devils Tower to Grand Teton or Mount Rushmore to Grand Teton for example.

If you are short on time, you may be quite happy to do this drive through Grand Teton National Park on Teton Park Road only from Moose WY to Moran WY with a few short stops for overlooks.

This is basically driving from the Grand Teton National Park Moose entry station to near the Moran entry station, when you are driving from south to north. (map) And then you can continue driving north from Grand Teton to Yellowstone. (Opposite if you are driving Yellowstone to Grand Teton!)

Driving this portion of the Grand Teton Scenic Loop Drive, Moose to Moran on Teton Park Road, without any stops will be around a 40 minute drive.

One of the turn-offs onto a side road along Teton Park Road to know about is the road to Jenny Lake Scenic Drive.

Jenny Lake Scenic Drive is the road you take to get to a famous Jenny Lake overlook that doesn’t require any hiking. (You can also hike around Jenny Lake. You can also take a boat across Jenny Lake.)

One again, it will get amazing views on the Tetons on your way to Jenny Lake overlook!

Should you drive the entire Grand Teton Scenic Loop Drive?

Well… it depends… 😜

If you’re making it a one way drive, from Grand Teton or Yellowstone, or Yellowstone to Grand Teton, then doing the whole loop will require a backtrack at some point.

So it will be about how much time you want to spend and whether you will like what you see by only driving one side.

That said, I do think it’s possible to have a perfect drive through Grand Teton National Park by just driving one side.

But, THAT said, there may be some photo spots that you really want to see on both sides.

So… personal preference!

Cost to visit Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton National Park requires a national park entry fee.

In 2021, the cost of a Grand Teton National Park 7-day pass is $35 per car. There is no one-day pass. See current fees.

Generally speaking, If you will be visiting 3 national parks within a year, then it will be worth it to get the annual national park pass.

So if Grand Teton National Park is a part of a greater national park road trip, and you will also be visiting Yellowstone National Park and Devils Tower National Monument, then the annual pass will be worth it!

As long as the Grand Teton National Park entry booth is staffed, you can buy the park pass when you arrive.
