Hi there!
If you’re looking to see geologic formations in Michigan, or if you’re just looking for pretty views on Lake Superior, a visit to Devils Washtub in the Keweenaw Peninsula is one place to consider going when you’re in the UP!
Michigan has a history of volcano activity, although that was a LONG time ago. It’s said that “volcano” things you see in Michigan are the result of activity that happened at least a billion of years ago.

This was posted at Hunter’s Point Park, another scenic spot in the Keweenaw Peninsula, a less than 10 minute drive from Devils Washtub.
In Hawaii, I’ve walked over a lot of rock formations on the coast that were the result of volcanic activity in Hawaii. Being at Devil’s Washtub in the UP reminded me a little of walking across lava rocks!
And so, Devils Washtub is like a coastal hike over lava rocks! In some ways it feels that way to me anyway.
Well, maybe calling it a “hike” is generous.
There’s a short dirt trail that will lead you to the coast (Lake Superior), and from there, you have the views! And then you can walk as much or as little across the rocks as you want. So it can be a quick roadside stop.
This is located at the northern tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, in the western part of the Upper Peninsula.
This can be a perfect stop to make when you’re driving from Copper Harbor to Eagle Harbor. (Or Eagle Harbor to Copper Harbor!)
On google maps, it’s located right near a point that’s called the “northernmost point in Michigan.” So you will also be in the far north of Michigan when you visit Devils Washtub too. (That would be the northernmost point of “mainland” Michigan though – Isle Royale National Park is an island in Michigan that’s further north.)

PHOTOS from the Devil’s Washtub roadside stop near Copper Harbor!
Your destination for google maps can be Devils Washtub which is on M-26.
You will want to be sure to have offline google maps downloaded before you leave home though, because data in the Keweenaw Peninsula, and the UP in general, can be spotty. With offline maps, you can navigate around the UP even with no data!
You’ll know you’re in the right spot when you see the Dapple Gray bed and breakfast log cabin.
It’s across the street from where the trail to Devil’s Washtub starts.
Right near the trailhead which is near a curve in the road, there’s a little pullover area for parking.
And then you can walk on the trail that starts on the side of the road!
And within a minute, you will be right at the Lake Superior shoreline!
And then you can continue walking around to take in the Lake Superior views!
And that’s a bit of what you can see with a roadside stop on your M-26 drive in the Keweenaw Peninsula!
