ALOHA!
A quiet beach on Maui even during peak tourist season?!
Yes, it exists!
West Maui as a whole can be considered a tourist hotspot with many crowded beaches to be found.
If you’re looking to try to find a beach to hang out at without the crowds, you may consider giving a visit to Oneloa Beach aka Ironwoods Beach in Kapalua!

There are coastal sand dunes here!

Now, these are small dunes that don’t compare in size to national lakeshore park sand dunes found elsewhere in the US, but the Ironwoods sand dunes are still considered to be important.

Sand dunes play an important role in protecting the shorelines and providing habitat for many of the unique plants and animals found in Hawaii.
Coastal erosion is a natural process.
The dynamic nature of shorelines can be observed in the annual retreat and recovery of many beaches.

Ironwoods Beach parking

There’s a parking lot located right at the start of the trail to Ironwoods Beach aka Oneloa Beach. You can also consider this parking for the Kapalua Coastal Trail.
Google maps also has another Oneloa Beach listed, so make sure to check that it’s taking you to Kapalua if you’re relying on google maps for driving directions. (Makena Beach in South Maui is also officially called Oneloa Beach although that beach is more commonly called Makena Beach or Big Beach.) You can also look for Kapalua Ironwoods on google maps and it will take you to the parking lot.

Getting to Ironwoods Beach by bus

It’s possible to get to Oneloa Beach by bus. There’s a bus that goes to Kapalua.
It’s about a 10 minute walk from the nearest bus stop to Ironwoods parking lot for the start of the beach path.

If you’re coming from Kaanapali or Lahaina, then it’ll be a direct bus to get to Kapalua. It’s a 45 minute bus ride from Kaanapali, and a 75 minute bus ride from Lahaina. If you’re coming from elsewhere, then you’ll transfer at Lahaina to get on the bus to Kapalua.
Google maps is a reliable way to get around Maui by bus. You’ll select the public transit option. If it’s not showing that the bus stop is a 10 minute walk from the Ironwoods, then that likely means the bus is temporarily not going there. But in normal times, you can get there by bus!
This bus route is generally once an hour, so it’s best to plan ahead and pay attention to the bus timings!

Path to beach
You will see the trail to the coast from the parking lot.

Dangers of Oneloa Beach: High surf, strong current, slippery rocks.

On your way down this path, there’s also a small faucet to rinse off the sand on your way back. (The only beach facilities you will find here.)

Once you reach the end of the path down, you’ll meet the trail that goes along the coast!

At this point you are basically directly at Ironwoods Beach aka Oneloa Beach, so it’s just a matter of taking the “stairs” down to the beach! There are a couple of sets of stairs along the sand dunes that you can take.

Enjoy the beach!!

For another quieter beach on Maui that usually gets less tourists, try Makena Cove aka Secret Cove! This is located in South Maui. Ironwoods Beach is sometimes referred to as a photography spot for couples, and the same goes for Makena Cove.
