Day trip to the West Maui Mountains
Since Maui is not that big, you can make this a day trip to the West Maui Mountains from really anywhere on the island. So it can make for a great day trip from the top Maui beach town areas of West Maui (Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kapalua) and South Maui (Kihei, Wailea).
The hiking trails on this list are among the places on Maui where you need a car to get to. While there is a Maui bus, it does not go near these hikes.

One day in Maui: The timeline
Of course, your experience may vary! But just to give you an idea of how long you might take, here is how it was for me! I generally move around at a leisurely pace. Times approximate!
- 10:50am: Started the Waihee Ridge Trail
- 12:05pm: Arrived at the Waihee Ridge Trail “summit”
- 1:10pm: Arrived back at the Waihee Ridge trailhead parking
- 1:55pm: Started the 13 Crossings hike
- 2:20pm: Arrived at bamboo forest
- 3:00pm: Arrived at waterfalls #1
- 3:30pm: Arrived at waterfalls #2
- 4:15pm: Arrived back at 13 Crossings trailhead
- 5:00pm: Arrived at Iao Valley State Park
- 5:30pm: Left Iao Valley State Park
And so, the Waihee Ridge Trail took me a little less than 2.5 hours to complete.
The way I did the 13 Crossings hike also took me a little less than 2.5 hours to complete. (There is a fork in the stream, and I went in both directions. Going each way takes you to separate waterfalls.)
I spent around 30 minutes at Iao Valley State Park that included a walk on the Iao Needle Lookout Trail.

🐠 Here are things you must consider packing for Hawaii!
You can find these things on Amazon. I am an Amazon Associate.
- Swimsuit or swimming shirt aka rash guard
- rash guard: swim set for women and swim shirt for men
- Water shoes
- Waterproof phone case (so you can capture pictures of fishies underwater!)
- cheapo phone case OR waterproof camera
- I also have this "camera" wrist float to attach to my cheapo waterproof phone case so my phone won't sink to the bottom of the ocean in case I somehow let go of it. (Mine does stay afloat - test this for yourself before completely trusting it!)
- Swimming goggles or snorkeling mask set
- Reef-safe(r) sunscreen
- lightweight travel towel
- walking sandals perfect for Hawaii
- teva is a popular outdoor shoe brand
- teva sandals for women
- teva sandals for men
I also don't go snorkeling in Hawaii without a personal swim float buoy. Not only does it help to keep me visible, but it makes for a perfect way to rest out in deeper water! Oh, and it also serves as a dry bag so I can take stuff into the water with me.
Another way I have taken valuables into the water with me is to wear a travel money belt that I don't mind getting wet with salt water (it's not waterproof but I have several so I just use one of them) and then I put things in a ziplock freezer bag, and put that freezer bag in the money belt.
There are also designated waterproof waist pouches that you can store your valuables and take into the water with you.
