At the time I did this, getting to the end of Nahiku Road from the Hana Highway was a combination of driving and walking.
My trip to the Nahiku viewpoint was in January 2020 a little after 3pm.
Your experience of getting to the end of Nahiku Road may vary!
How much time do you need for a stop at Nahiku Viewpoint?
This will largely depend on how long you want to spend at the Nahiku Viewpoint to take in the views of the ocean and mountains, but it may be reasonable to consider the Nahiku Viewpoint as a 1 hour stop.
How to get to the Nahiku Viewpoint from the Hana Highway
If you are driving on the Hana Highway in the direction of Hana, the turnoff for Nahiku Road will be on the left side towards the ocean.
This will be right after you cross the bridge to see Makapipi Falls. (You won’t actually see Makapipi Falls as you are driving though, you’ll need to stop and get out of the car and you’ll be standing above the waterfalls!)
👆 The Hana Highway is the road the car above is driving on the right side. On the left side is Nahiku Road.
👆 Hana Highway on the right. Nahiku Road on the left.
👆 Drive down on Nahiku Road.
So after you get off Hana Highway, you’ll drive down Nahiku Road for about 10 minutes until you reach the Nahiku church.
While there is a small parking area here, there are only a limited number of parking spaces.
The church is as far as you can drive, since the rest of Nahiku Road is closed to car traffic for visitors.
This is near the Nahiku Bridge.
👆 There was a sign near the Hana Highway that Nahiku Road is closed at the Nahiku Bridge. This is near the church.
👆 As far as you can drive on Nahiku Road, near the church.
From the church, you can start walking the rest of the way to the end of Nahiku Road.
The end of Nahiku Road is the ocean aka Nahiku viewpoint!
This walk will likely take you around 10 minutes or less.
From the church, as you walk Nahiki Road, you’ll cross over the bridge where you can see the Makapipi Stream.
Then you’ll keep walking onwards and come across a lookout spot.
Once you’ve taking in the views there, you can continue walking until the road reaches the ocean!
This area is also called Nahiku Landing.
So from the Hana Highway to the Nahiku Viewpoint may take you around 20 minutes, with a combination of driving and walking.
And then, it might also take you around 20 minutes to get back to the Hana Highway.
And so, you might allow for around an hour for a stop at the Nahiku Viewpoint:
- Get off the Hana Highway and drive/walk to end of Nahiku Road – maybe 20 minutes
- Hang out at Nahiku Viewpoint – maybe 20 minutes
- Get back to the Hana Highway – maybe 20 minutes
But of course, you may want to stay for longer to watch the ocean waves crashing against the lava rocks at the Nahiku Viewpoint!
