The Moana Surfrider is the First Lady of Waikiki.
👆 The Moana Surfrider Waikiki Beach is a historic hotel in Hawaii. It is a Westin resort in Hawaii.
The Moana Surfrider is also called the “First Lady of Waikiki,” and it is on the list of the National Register of Historic Places.
According to the Moana Surfrider:
The Moana Hotel officially opened on March 11, 1901, ushering in the birth of tourism for the islands.
Designed in the old colonial style architecture of the period, it boasted 75 rooms and was the costliest, most elaborate and modern hotel building in the Hawaiian Islands at the time.
If you are staying at the Moana Surfrider, you can also join Hawaiian cultural activities like hula lessons and ribbon lei making. (This is only for hotel guests.)
Check to see if there will be a historic tour of the hotel while you are in Waikiki.
Can you swim at the Moana Surfrider beach?
Waikiki Beach is for swimming, and that includes the beach at the Moana Surfrider!
You will be swimming with views of the iconic Diamond Head!

If you do not yet have your hotel booked, then you may want to try to avoid going to Waikiki at a time when there is a greater risk for jellyfish along Waikiki Beach!
If there’s a risk for jellyfish, signs will go up along the beach. Unless there’s a serious jellyfish invasion, the beach won’t be closed so you CAN still go swimming and people do get in the water, but… do you?! 😜

Moana Surfrider at Kalakaua Avenue
Aside from the convenience of the beach, the Moana Surfrider is also along Kalakaua Avenue on the other side of the hotel.
This is a main road in Waikiki where you can find lots of shops.
