So the Kalahaku Overlook is a viewpoint in Haleakala National Park.

Haleakala Highway is the name of the road that you’ll be driving up to get to the Haleakala summit. (And you will be driving UP!)

And it is along the Haleakala Highway that you can find the turn-off for the easy and quick roadside stop of Kalahaku Overlook.

If you are looking to drive up at a slower pace to get used to the high altitude just in case, then you can use Kalahaku Overlook as an excuse to stop.

Here, you can get your first glimpse of what’s often called the Haleakala crater that you’ve surely seen in pictures. (Or, you can make it your last glimpse of the crater on the drive back down!)

 

 

That said, this won’t be your only chance to see the Haleakala crater!

The Pa Kaoao Trail and Sliding Sands Trail will also offer you the epic Haleakala views that you’ve seen in pictures!

Getting to Kalahaku Overlook

So you don’t miss it, there is Kalahaku Overlook on google maps. You may want to download the free offline google maps before you go in case you don’t get data service.

There is a dedicated parking area for the Kalahaku Overlook, and then from there it’s a short trail to the overlook to see the Haleakala crater!

If there is no cloud obstruction, then you can see the Big Island off in the distance too!

 

 

 

At the time I was here, when you looked over on the other side, you could see that we were above the clouds!

 

 

And then “below” the parking area, there’s a short trail too.

 

 

And that’s a bit about one stop for an overlook along the Haleakala Highway!
