Apparently there was some criticism from locals of Hawaii at the time for having a hula dog, because it’s not authentically Hawaiian.
In any case, Anthony Bourdain went there, so that makes it a worthy Waikiki food spot, right? 😜 Just like you want to go to the Hawaii food spots that Gordan Ramsay went to!
Anthony Bourdain also later went back to Hawaii in 2015 for his show Parts Unknown: Hawaii.

What is a hula dog?
The signature hula dog is made with taro bread, polish sausage that’s a mix of beef and pork, jalapeno garlic lemon sauce, pineapple relish, and Hawaiian lilikoi mustard.
But you can also add variations to your hula dog!
Basically, you go to Hula Dog to get a hot dog with a bunch of classic “Hawaii” tastes that include local fruits of Hawaii.
You can go to Hula Dog in Hawaii when you are on Oahu.
The Hula Dog location is in Waikiki.
You can “build your own hot dog” or if you just want to classic “Hawaiian-style hot dog,” then you can make it easy and order the poi dog!
How to make a Hawaiian-style hot dog at Hula Dog
Again, you can make it simple and order the poi dog, or you can change it up a bit based on your taste preferences!
1. Bread
You can have 3 different types of bread for your hula dog:
- White (brioche)
- Hawaiian (sweet)
- Taro (purple)
2. Meat
You can have 2 different types of hot dogs for your hula dog:
- Veggie
- Polish sausage (mix of beef and pork)
3. Garlic lemon sauce
You can have spicy garlic lemon sauce for your hula dog:
- Habanero (hot)
- Jalapeno (medium)
- Original (mild)
4. Tropical relish
You can have different types of tropical relish for your hula dog:
- Papaya
- Pineapple
- Mango
- Coconut
5. Mustard
You can have different types of mustard for your hula dog:
- Hawaiian mustard (lilikoi)
- Dijon mustard
- Yellow mustard
Or you can choose traditional hot dog toppings like siracha, sweet relish, or ketchup.

Where is Hula Dog in Waikiki located?
Hula Dog is a Waikiki food spot that is located a bit “inland” (aka away from Waikiki Beach).
But it is not that far from Waikiki Beach, as it’s just a 5 minute walk to get from Hula Dog to the beach! (map)
You will end up at Kuhio Beach, which is where you will find one of the banyan trees in Waikiki.
This section of Waikiki Beach is also the location of the free Waikiki hula show.
