ALOHA!
You can rent snorkeling gear at Hanauma Bay.
If you already know that the only snorkeling you’ll be doing in Hawaii is at Hanauma Bay, then renting snorkeling gear directly at Hanauma Bay is the most convenient option.
It’s possible to book your Hanauma Bay snorkel rental.

It’s also possible to get a Hanauma Bay shuttle that comes with snorkeling gear rental.
If Hanauma Bay is just one of the several spots you will be going snorkeling on Oahu, then you might want to think further on whether to buy or rent snorkeling gear!
It’s best to have a reservation before you go to Hanauma Bay.
Otherwise, you can try to get tickets by going really early to get the walk-in tickets, but these do sell out.
How much does it cost to rent snorkeling gear at Hanauma Bay?
The cost to rent snorkeling gear at Hanauma Bay is around $20.
This is for a full snorkeling set.
If you only want a mask and snorkel (the thing that allows you to breathe), then it will cost $12 to rent that.
If you only want to rent snorkeling fins, then it will cost $9 to rent that.
Snorkeling fins can take up a lot of luggage space, so it can be an option to not buy fins and rent them when you arrive!
You need a credit card to pay for the Hanauma Bay snorkel rental. Cash is not accepted.
You will also be asked for some kind of collateral like a drivers license, passport, car keys, or $50.
This is how it was when I was there in April 2023.

Where do you rent snorkeling gear at Hanauma Bay?
You will rent snorkeling gear at Hanauma Bay down at the beach.
And it is, “down at the beach”! You will be going down to the beach!
So once you arrive at Hanauma Bay, first you will check-in and/or buy your tickets.
Then, you will be directed to a little outdoor mini-museum area where you can learn about marine life in Hanauma Bay and Hawaii.
This is where you’ll be while you wait for your turn in the “theater.”
Then you’ll be called to enter the theater, where you’ll basically be asked to be a partner in preserving Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve.
This most notably includes not standing on the coral reef because doing so can damage it. Damaging the coral reef means that you are destroying the food source of the little fishies that you are coming to see. So, help to keep the fishies at Hanauma Bay! Try not to step on or touch the coral reef!
So after it’s explained to you that your help is needed to preserve Hanauma Bay, it’s now time to actually go down to Hanauma Bay!
You will walk out of the theater, and then you can board the Hanauma Bay tram.
The tram will drive down to sea level aka the beach of Hanauma Bay.
Or, you can also walk down instead of taking the tram. Walking is actually better if you want to stop and take pictures of Hanauma Bay from above.
So whether by tram or by foot, you will go down to street level.
Then from here, you will basically walk straight ahead where you see the path that goes alongside the buildings. This includes the bathroom.
You’ll also be passing the outdoor showers.
At some point you will probably see a sign for snorkeling gear rental, and you’ve arrived!
What type of snorkeling gear can you rent at Hanauma Bay?
Snorkeling gear that you can rent at Hanauma Bay includes a snorkeling mask, fins, snorkel, swim vest, and wetsuit.
You can rent a prescription snorkeling mask as well.
And that’s a bit about snorkel gear rental at Hanauma Bay!

🐠 Here are things you must consider packing for Hawaii!
You can find these things on Amazon. I am an Amazon Associate.
- Swimsuit or swimming shirt aka rash guard
- rash guard: swim set for women and swim shirt for men
- Water shoes
- Waterproof phone case (so you can capture pictures of fishies underwater!)
- cheapo phone case OR waterproof camera
- I also have this "camera" wrist float to attach to my cheapo waterproof phone case so my phone won't sink to the bottom of the ocean in case I somehow let go of it. (Mine does stay afloat - test this for yourself before completely trusting it!)
- Swimming goggles or snorkeling mask set
- Reef-safe(r) sunscreen
- lightweight travel towel
- walking sandals perfect for Hawaii
- teva is a popular outdoor shoe brand
- teva sandals for women
- teva sandals for men
I also don't go snorkeling in Hawaii without a personal swim float buoy. Not only does it help to keep me visible, but it makes for a perfect way to rest out in deeper water! Oh, and it also serves as a dry bag so I can take stuff into the water with me.
Another way I have taken valuables into the water with me is to wear a travel money belt that I don't mind getting wet with salt water (it's not waterproof but I have several so I just use one of them) and then I put things in a ziplock freezer bag, and put that freezer bag in the money belt.
There are also designated waterproof waist pouches that you can store your valuables and take into the water with you.
