The Grotto Bar is now closed, but you can see some pictures of the Maui resort area of Kaanapali Beach below.
ALOHA!
This is a completely man-made cave (aka not natural) on Maui but it could still be a fun experience to have a drink or 2 (and maybe some food) at a bar in a “cave” (grotto).
There’s even a cave pool.

The Grotto Bar is located along Kaanapali Beach in West Maui.

There are basically 2 ways to get to the Grotto Bar.
1. Walk into the waterfalls through pool

A way you can get there if you’re staying at the Hyatt
2. Walk along the oceanfront Kaanapali Beachwalk trail

The publicly accessible way to get there if you’re not a guest at the Hyatt
Outdoor pool at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort
So the Hyatt located on Kaanapali Beach also has an outdoor pool. This pool is only for guests of the Hyatt.
You can walk right through from the pool side, and it’s connected to the Grotto Bar, walking (or swimming!) through a “waterfall” along the way!

Kaanapali beachwalk
aka oceanfront paved trail!
If you’re not staying at the Hyatt (and even if you are – another option!), then you can access the Grotto Bar by taking the “Kaanapali Beachwalk” which is a paved trail that runs right alongside Kaanapali Beach.

Once you get in the area of the Hyatt Regency, you’ll see an opening for the “cave” to go to the Grotto Bar.

And now…
What’s on the menu at the Grotto Bar?!
Drink offerings, food offerings, prices, and everything subject to change! These photos were taken February 2020.
At the Grotto Bar, they have pretty much the same menu as the Umalu, another poolside dining option at the Hyatt. The Umalu menu shown below is what was located at the Grotto Bar.

🐠 Here are things you must consider packing for Hawaii!
You can find these things on Amazon. I am an Amazon Associate.
- Swimsuit or swimming shirt aka rash guard
- rash guard: swim set for women and swim shirt for men
- Water shoes
- Waterproof phone case (so you can capture pictures of fishies underwater!)
- cheapo phone case OR waterproof camera
- I also have this "camera" wrist float to attach to my cheapo waterproof phone case so my phone won't sink to the bottom of the ocean in case I somehow let go of it. (Mine does stay afloat - test this for yourself before completely trusting it!)
- Swimming goggles or snorkeling mask set
- Reef-safe(r) sunscreen
- lightweight travel towel
- walking sandals perfect for Hawaii
- teva is a popular outdoor shoe brand
- teva sandals for women
- teva sandals for men
I also don't go snorkeling in Hawaii without a personal swim float buoy. Not only does it help to keep me visible, but it makes for a perfect way to rest out in deeper water! Oh, and it also serves as a dry bag so I can take stuff into the water with me.
Another way I have taken valuables into the water with me is to wear a travel money belt that I don't mind getting wet with salt water (it's not waterproof but I have several so I just use one of them) and then I put things in a ziplock freezer bag, and put that freezer bag in the money belt.
There are also designated waterproof waist pouches that you can store your valuables and take into the water with you.
