You can drive the slow scenic route along the A1A with a stop at South Ponte Vedra Beach!
And then you can be on the lookout for shells too as you are walking the beach!
I did come across a bunch of shells along the A1A and Atlantic Ocean on South Ponte Vedra Beach!
The South Ponte Vedra Beach public access is right along the A1A.
You will see the parking lot as you are driving the A1A.
I stopped by South Ponte Vedra Beach on the drive from St Augustine to Amelia Island.
I also saw a bunch of shells without trying too hard at St Augustine Beach. So you can go shelling in St Augustine too! There were also tons of crushed shells.
And this is also how it was at South Ponte Vedra Beach.
There were a ton of crushed shells that were scattered on South Ponte Vedra Beach!
And then closer to the water line, there were full (unbroken) shells that were easier to find.
I did not try very hard at South Ponte Vedra Beach and it was easy to find lots of shells!

South Ponte Vedra shells along the beach
I saw shells at South Ponte Vedra Beach in January 2023. As it goes with shelling, your experience may vary!
This was really just a quick trip to South Ponte Vedra Beach to see if there were shells.
I stopped by South Ponte Vedra Beach on the drive from St Augustine to Amelia Island, so it was a drive to the north to get to South Ponte Vedra Beach.
I followed along on google maps to know when I was approaching South Ponte Vedra Beach Recreation Area. (map)
And knowing that I was approaching it, the South Ponte Vedra Beach parking was easy to spot.
It’s located directly alongside the A1A.
So you’ll pull into the parking lot, and the South Ponte Vedra public beach access is right there!
And then, you can take that public access boardwalk, and you can see sweeping views of South Ponte Vedra Beach and the Atlantic Ocean!
And then you can walk down to the beach!
When you’re at the top of the stairs, the reddish orange you see down below is likely crushed seashells!
This may be what you see first when you get down to the beach!
At first I saw a few broken shells on the beach.
But then I walked towards the water.
And there were lots of un-broken shells!
I really didn’t walk very far at all along the beach and there were lots of shells.
If finding seashells excites you, then it’s very possible to have a happy shelling at South Ponte Vedra Beach if it’s like this!
So if you’ll be driving the A1A and passing through this area, you can stop by to look for shells!
You can start walking along South Ponte Vedra Beach to look for shells!
And even if you don’t find shells, South Ponte Vedra Beach will always come with VIEWS!

HAPPY SHELLING ON SOUTH PONTE VEDRA BEACH!
In the morning head to Blue Spring State Park to see manatees (winter only), then drive along the A1A through Flagler Beach
Then stop by Washington Oaks Gardens State Park.
Then stop by Fort Matanzas National Monument.
And then stay overnight in St Augustine!
The next morning, watch a St Augustine sunrise!
Then you can continue your drive up north, stopping by the St Augustine Lighthouse, maybe Anastasia State Park, maybe a St Augustine food truck, maybe historic St Augustine including Castillo de San Marcos National Monument.
Continue the drive on the A1A and stop to go shelling at South Ponte Vedra Beach.
And then onwards to take the Mayport car ferry. (The ferry is closed through early May 2023, check for updates.)
Then stop by Big Talbot Island State Park to go to Boneyard Beach (short hike).
And then finally... you've made it to Amelia Island beaches!
