Hi there!
Amelia Island has several beaches with beach facilities that give you conveniences.
These will be the most popular beaches of Amelia Island.
There are also a ton of smaller public beach access paths that you can use to get to the beach on Amelia Island.
These smaller Amelia Island beach public access spots tend not to have any facilities (aka no bathrooms and outdoor showers), but you’ll likely find less people at them.
If you’re just driving through Amelia Island without an overnight stop, then one of these smaller beach access paths can make for the perfect stop for a perfect Amelia Island beach picture!
I spent a few days on Amelia Island as a stop on the drive back up north. Here are some pictures!

You can also look for shells on Amelia Island!

There are over 20 Amelia Island public beach access spots with parking lots. (There are many more without parking lots too.)
The parking areas for these smaller public access paths tend to be small.
This can really limit the number of people that will be on the beach!

Some public beach access trails will make you work harder to get to the beach!
There are sand trails to get to the beach, and there are boardwalk trails to get to the beach.
If you happen to end up at a sand trail one and prefer a boardwalk one, then just drive a bit further down to the next one to have a look at which type it is!

👆 Fernandina Beach public access: You can walk through sand dunes to get to the beach on Amelia Island! (Or you can choose other public beach access spots for an easier way to get to the beach!)

👆 Some Amelia Island beach access trails have very loose sand and steep dune slopes that may be difficult to walk through.

👆 Fernandina Beach public access: You can walk a boardwalk over sand dunes to get to the beach on Amelia Island!
And between the public access, there are also private beach access for residents and guests of Amelia Island’s beachfront homes.

👆 This sand trail is a public Fernandina Beach access, and on both sides there are private beach access boardwalks.

👆 There are many private and public beach access trails that go over Amelia Island dunes.

You don’t need to look very hard to find public access to the beach.
You can just drive along the main road that’s ocean side, and you’ll come across many Fernandina Beach public access parking lots.

For more for your Florida road trip, it’s also popular to take the Mayport ferry on your way to Amelia Island if you’re driving north on the A1A, or on your way down south on the A1A if you’re driving that way after Amelia Island! For example if you’re driving between St Augustine and Amelia Island!

Read the hotel reviews at partner website booking.com!
I stayed at the Sea Cottages of Amelia. (My picture above.)
While it’s not a beachfront hotel, it is a 5 minute walk to the Seaside Beach Park. Or, you can drive. And then it’s a 2 minute drive!
More hotels near Seaside Beach Park include:
- Amelia Hotel at the Beach (right across the street from Seaside Beach parking)
- Ocean Coast Hotel at the Beach
- Hampton Inn Amelia Island at Fernandina Beach
- Residence Inn by Marriott Amelia Island
What is the difference between Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach?
While Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach
The town of Fernandina Beach is the main town of Amelia Island.
The downtown historic Fernandina Beach is basically the tourist hotspot of the island of Amelia Island.
So Amelia Island refers to the whole island, while Fernandina Beach refers to the city.
The tons of public beach access paths on Amelia Island are the city of Fernandina Beach public beach access paths.

What are the best beaches on Amelia Island?
Among the most popular Amelia Island beaches are Main Beach, Seaside Beach, and American Beach.
Main Beach is the Amelia Island beach that’s located on the northern side of Amelia Island, and it is near downtown Fernandina Beach.
Seaside Beach Park is the beach that’s located in a central area of Amelia Island.
American Beach is the beach that’s located on the southern side of Amelia Island. This beach can be a perfect part of an Amelia Island African American heritage itinerary. (Explained a little bit more below why this Amelia Island beach is a part of American history and black history.)
Florida state park beaches on Amelia Island

Amelia Island also has 2 state parks.
The Amelia Island state parks with beaches are Amelia Island State Park and Fort Clinch State Park. (Since there are Florida state park entry fees, there is a fee to go to these Amelia Island beaches.)
You can even drive on the beach at Amelia Island State Park.
See current fees:
And just across the bridge from Amelia Island on the southern end is Big Talbot Island State Park where you will find the famous Boneyard Beach.
Black history in the US at an Amelia Island beach
You can go to American Beach on Amelia Island for a piece of American history.
By going to American Beach, you will be in a spot that represented a darker time in American history.
There were “white beaches” of sorts with beaches for white people and “black beaches” of sorts with beaches for black people.
American Beach on Amelia Island was one of the beaches in Florida that was known as a beach in which black people were “allowed” to go to.
👇 At one of the Florida Panhandle beaches, the National Park Service explains white beaches vs black beaches at Gulf Islands National Seashore. This national park informational sign is at Johnson Beach, which is a beach with historical similarities to American Beach.

👆 Across Florida, there were “whites only” beaches. St Augustine FL was another Florida town with such beaches. To protest these segregated beaches in St Augustine, there was what’s been called the “St Augustine wade-in.”
The boring safety message about swimming at Amelia Island beaches!

In short, take care!
The ocean is powerful!
Rip currents exist! Know before you go!
