ALOHA!
So you want to go to Waianapanapa State Park!
And you want to spend more time in Waianapanapa State Park, in Hana, along the Road to Hana, or in East Maui in general!
You can make it an overnight stay in Hana at Waianapanapa State Park!
There are cabins in Waianapanapa State Park!
Staying at a Waianapanapa cabin can be a GREAT way to spend some extra time not only in Waianapanapa State Park, but also on the Road to Hana!
There is a 2 night minimum stay at a Waianapanapa State Park cabin. (At the time of my booking, I think the exception to this was if you find a 1 night availability on the calendar, without an additional night on either side available.)
And having 2 nights in East Maui will allow you to slow down on the Road to Hana and get a greater appreciation for East Maui! (Instead of having a jam-packed 7am to 7pm 12-hour Road to Hana day!)
Waianapanapa State Park cabins are located pretty near the ocean.
There are some cabins that will give you access to the Waianapanapa Coastal Trail South with a one minute walk, or less! Some other cabins might be a few minutes. More below on which are the best cabins if you want to be near this trail with ocean views, along with a cabin map!
The Hawaii state park cabins in Waianapanapa State Park are pretty comfortable, but it does also require you to come prepared and bring your own sleeping gear. (This can be similar to packing for camping, so you can read about what to pack for camping in Hawaii for ideas.)
Overall, while there are many amenities for a comfortable stay, you can think of it as a simple place to sleep!
There is a campground for tent camping at Waianapanapa State Park, although as of early 2022, this is still closed. Check for current updates.
While the campground is closed, the Waianapanapa State Park cabins are open and able to be booked.
You can also get a campervan permit at Waianapanapa State Park. (You need to rent a car that has been designed for sleeping to get this permit.)
About the Waianapanapa State Park cabins
I stayed at a Waianapanapa State Park cabin in February 2020.
As you know, travel has changed since then.
But this can start to give you an idea of what the Waianapanapa State Park cabins can be like!
I stayed in Waianapanapa cabin #6.
1. You will be near access to Waianapanapa Coastal Trail.
The Waianapanapa Coastal Trail is the main trail through Waianapanapa State Park.
It is in fact a trail that runs almost entirely along the coast.
This means ocean views pretty much the entire way!
Side note!
Here are some popular activities you need to know about to get some very-Hawaii experiences! Read the reviews on the partner websites listed below!

🐠 If you're going snorkeling (or to the beach!), here are things you must consider packing for Hawaii!
You can find these things on Amazon. I am an Amazon Associate.
- Swimsuit or swimming shirt aka rash guard
- rash guard: swim set for women and swim shirt for men
- Water shoes
- Waterproof phone case (so you can capture pictures of fishies underwater!)
- cheapo phone case OR waterproof camera
- I also have this "camera" wrist float to attach to my cheapo waterproof phone case so my phone won't sink to the bottom of the ocean in case I somehow let go of it. (Mine does stay afloat - test this for yourself before completely trusting it!)
- Swimming goggles or snorkeling mask set
- Reef-safe(r) sunscreen
- lightweight travel towel
- walking sandals perfect for Hawaii
- teva is a popular outdoor shoe brand
- teva sandals for women
- teva sandals for men
I also don't go snorkeling in Hawaii without a personal swim float buoy. Not only does it help to keep me visible, but it makes for a perfect way to rest out in deeper water! Oh, and it also serves as a dry bag so I can take stuff into the water with me.
Another way I have taken valuables into the water with me is to wear a travel money belt that I don't mind getting wet with salt water (it's not waterproof but I have several so I just use one of them) and then I put things in a ziplock freezer bag, and put that freezer bag in the money belt.
There are also designated waterproof waist pouches that you can store your valuables and take into the water with you.
How to save money on your trip
I tend to use booking.com or hotels.com to look for the cheapest hotels. You can also try the expedia hotels site (good for car rentals too) or see if you like any of the vrbo vacation rentals.
Search for the cheapest car rentals at the Maui airport.

As part of packing for camping on Maui, I had a lot of layers of clothing and a turkish towel.
