You can also get to Kailua Beach by bus if you are in Oahu without a car.
There is the Oahu bus that goes to Kailua Beach.
Is Kailua Beach good for swimming?

Yes, you can swim at Kailua Beach in Oahu!
The water color is inviting!
According to the Ocean Safety Division of Honolulu:
An area marked by buoys along the parkβs shore is reserved for swimmers.
That is… Kailua Beach is good for swimming if the ocean conditions are calm!
You can check the current conditions at Kailua Beach before you go.

There are lifeguards at Kailua Beach.

There are picnic tables at Kailua Beach Park.

There are outdoor showers at Kailua Beach Park.

Kailua Beach is a pretty long beach!
Kailua Beach can also be a perfect beach for a long beach walk!
According to the Ocean Safety Division of Honolulu:
Kailua Beach, a beautiful beach two and a half miles long, lies between Alala and Kapoho Points.
Do you have to pay to go to Kailua Beach?
There is no Kailua Beach beach entry fee, so Kailua Beach is a free public beach!
There is also free parking at Kailua Beach.
So Kailua Beach is a FREE beach you can go to on Oahu! (There are a lot of free beaches on Oahu!)
There are Kailua Beach parking lots.
You can drive to Kailua Beach.
There are parking lots at Kailua Beach, although as it goes, you might end up arriving to a full lot.
Which Kailua Beach parking lot is better?
If you’re going to Kailua Beach because you want to walk to Lanikai Beach, then you will want to first look for the parking lot that’s closer to that side. (map)

Otherwise, you will probably find more room to spread out by going to the other side of Kailua Beach. This side would be better if you want to make it a long beach walk! On this side, you’ll more quickly get to an area where there’s probably less people. As you’re facing the ocean, you can make it a nice beach walk by going to the left! (map)

You can take a bus to Kailua Beach.
There are bus stops near Kailua Beach (and also around Kailua town).
So you can get from Waikiki to Kailua Beach by bus.

You just need to be prepared with time and patience!
It might take around 1.5 hours to get to Kailua Beach from Waikiki by bus. It will require a bus transfer. (map)
Google maps is an easy way to figure out the bus route. For best results, you want to adjust the departure time to some time during the day. If you are looking at this when it’s overnight in Hawaii, you may not get the most ideal route.
One way to figure out where the bus stops are located near Kailua Beach is really just to open up google maps and zoom in and move the map around and look for the little bus icons! (map)
Or, you can just make Kailua Beach Park your destination, and there you go! (map)
You will probably want to get a HOLO card to go to Kailua Beach by bus.
With the HOLO card, you will pay no more than $7.50 a day for the bus fare.
You can pay in cash too, but that will cost $3 in cash (exact change only) and you need to pay that every time you board the bus. See current bus fares.
Since you will have a transfer to get to Kailua Beach from Waikiki, that means it would cost you $6 in cash.
See more about taking the Oahu bus.
More below about what Kailua Beach Park is like!

You can walk to Kailua Beach from Lanikai.

So on this particular day, first I went to Lanikai Beach.
I took a bus to Lanikai (which is also a bus that passes by Kailua Beach bus stops).

π Bus to Kailua Beach and Kailua town. You can take a bus to Kailua Beach from Lanikai… or you can walk!

π Lanikai Beach. It’s reasonable to go to Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach in one day!

And then I walked to Kailua Beach!
Actually I decided I should go to the bathroom before I started the Lanikai Pillbox hike so I went to Kailua Beach for that. π If you are in a similar situation, you might first want to try Lanikai Park (map) although beware it says it’s for residents only. But the bathroom was closed when I went so I went to Kailua Beach.
So walking to Kailua Beach from Lanikai Beach might be around a 10-15 minute walk, although it will depend on how far down Lanikai Beach you are and how far down Kailua Beach you want to go.
But in any case, it is a beautiful walk to get to Kailua Beach from Lanikai!
Once you get near, first you’ll see the Lanikai Monument.

And then… views of Kailua Bay!
Even if you don’t have an interest in Lanikai, you might consider walking up this way from Kailua Beach just so you can get the amazing views of Kailua Bay and the ocean!

And as you are walking, before you know it, you will see a Kailua Beach parking lot!
If you are going in the opposite direction and can’t find parking near Lanikai Beach, then you can park at this Kailua Beach parking lot and then walk to Lanikai Beach from here.

It was a full parking lot at Kailua Beach with cars waiting for an available spot.
There is also a bathroom near this parking lot. (There’s another one walking further along Kailua Beach too.)
Kailua Beach Park: Walking through the park to the beach!

And then back to Lanikai to start the Lanikai Pillbox hike!

And that’s a bit about going to Kailua Beach!
I most recently went to Kailua Beach in February 2023! Your experience may vary!
Kailua Beach is on the east side of Oahu where you can find many more beautiful views!
