Hi there!
So there are many shelling beaches on Sanibel Island.
Tarpon Bay Beach isn’t as well-known and doesn’t have as much name recognition as other shelling beaches on Sanibel Island.
But it’s possible that you will not be disappointed if you go to Tarpon Bay Beach if shelling on Sanibel Island is your goal!
It felt like there were lots of shells as you keep walking and walking along the shoreline!
Of course, *asterisk, your experience may vary!
In any case, Tarpon Bay Beach is a good beach for shelling on Sanibel Island.
Tarpon Bay Beach shells
Yes, Tarpon Bay Beach is good for shells!
There is shelling at Tarpon Bay Beach, so you can make your time at Tarpon Bay Beach all about shelling.
You can find lots of seashells on the shores of Tarpon Bay Beach.

Sanibel Island shell identification guide
You have a chance to find lots of different types of shells at Tarpon Bay Beach!

You might want to go to the National Shell Museum before you go to Tarpon Bay Beach to give you an intro to shelling! (map)
According to Lee County, live shelling is not allowed on Sanibel Island. This means that you can’t take home anything you find that is alive. Otherwise, you can take home shells you find at Tarpon Bay Beach and other Sanibel Island beaches.
Sanibel Island seaweed

You might also see seaweed washed up on the shore at Tarpon Bay Beach with shells!
Seaweed and sea grass are considered to be an important part of the coastal ecosystem. If you see seaweed while shelling at Tarpon Bay Beach, you can just consider it a part of your Sanibel Island experience!

Sanibel Island visitor center

Since shelling is your goal (and even if it’s not), be sure to stop by the Sanibel Island visitor center!
You’ll look for signs for the visitor center right after you get on Sanibel Island.
Most importantly, you can pick up a shell identification guide!
You can also pick up a map of the shelling beaches of Sanibel Island and Captiva Island.

Cost to go shelling at Tarpon Bay Beach on Sanibel Island
In order to go shelling on Sanibel Island, you’ll need to drive across the Sanibel causeway bridge.
There is a toll for driving the bridge to Sanibel Island.
If you have a Lee County pass, a Florida SunPass, or any other kind of compatible pass, you can drive straight through and you will automatically be charged.
The cost of the Sanibel Island toll is $6 per car if you have a pass. If you don’t have a pass, it’s $9 per car. See current fees under Sanibel toll plaza.

There is also a Sanibel Island beach parking fee, and this includes at the Tarpon Bay Beach parking lot.
It is an hourly fee, and you can expect to pay around $5 an hour for parking. See current fees.

So the starting cost to go shelling at Tarpon Bay Beach is $11! ($6 toll + $5 for one hour)
But since you will probably be shelling at Tarpon Bay Beach for more than an hour, it will likely cost you minimum $16 for the Sanibel toll and Sanibel Island beach parking.

Sanibel Island shells at Tarpon Bay Beach
My Tarpon Bay Beach shelling trip was in April 2022. Your experience may vary!
There is a Tarpon Bay on Sanibel Island, but you aren’t actually going to Tarpon Bay for the shelling beach.
The Sanibel Island beach park that you are going to is officially called Tarpon Bay Road Beach Park.
What is commonly called Tarpon Bay Beach is at one end of the road called Tarpon Bay Road. This is the gulf coast end of the road. So you will be going to a gulf coast beach.
On the other end of Tarpon Bay Road to the north is the actual Tarpon Bay. (map)

So Tarpon Bay Beach is on google maps. (map)

👆 Explore the Sanibel Island map of Tarpon Bay Beach.
But the Tarpon Bay Beach parking lot is not directly at the beach. (That is, unless you have a disability permit, then you can park directly at the entrance of Tarpon Bay Beach Park.)

Instead, for most people, the driving directions you will want to use will be “Tarpon Bay Road Public Beach Parking.” (map)
Once you get on Sanibel Island, it will be about a 10 minute drive to get to the Tarpon Bay Beach parking lot, also called the Trost parking lot.

At the first main intersection you’ll see once you get on Sanibel Island, you will follow the sign towards Captiva Island. (The other direction is for Lighthouse Beach, another popular Sanibel Island beach.)
Eventually, you will see the Tarpon Bay Beach parking lot aka Trost parking lot.
Once you park, you’ll look for the payment station so that you can pay for parking.
There is a bathroom at the parking lot.

Then, you can start your walk to the beach!
Now, one minor inconvenience about Tarpon Bay Beach is that it does require a bit of a walk to get to.
It’s not that long of a walk, but again it’s not like the beach is right at the parking lot.
Maybe you’ll walk 5 minutes or so to get to the beach.
There is a sign at the parking lot that will point you in the direction of the beach.
You’ll start off walking along a paved path for walking and biking.
Then you will cross the main road to get to the “entrance” of Tarpon Bay Road Beach Park.

You will also see the bathroom at Tarpon Bay Road Beach Park.

You’ll keep walking to get to the beach, and you’ll also pass by the outdoor showers and picnic tables.

And then you’ll arrive at Tarpon Bay Beach!

You can start your shelling walk in either direction and look for shells at Tarpon Bay Beach!
I went to the right.
You can find shells scattered on Tarpon Bay Beach.

You can find mounds of shells at Tarpon Bay Beach along the water!

You can find shells in the water too, so you might want to wear water shoes when you go shelling!
