First, the only way to get to the top of Devils Tower is by rock climbing.

And if you do make it to the top of Devils Tower by rock climbing, no, you cannot camp on the top of Devils Tower.

Official National Park Service rules state that overnight sleeping on top of Devils Tower is not allowed.

1. It’s possible to see Devils Tower from the campground.

Check the bulletin board at the campground, or ask about it at the Devils Tower visitor center!

There is a trail from the campground to the amphitheater.

It’s a walk of a few minutes.

3. From the campground to a prairie dog town is a short walk!

If you walking past the amphitheater, the prairie dog town is basically right there!

Your indication that you are at the prairie dog town is the tons of mounds of dirt and holes in the ground.

You can also hear the prairie dogs chirping.

There are 2 trails that go around the prairie dog town.

When you are coming from the campground, continue straight ahead is the South Side Trail which will take you directly to the main road.

Walking off to the right is the Valley View Trail, and you can also see the Belle Fourche River by walking this way.

4. It’s around a 1.5 mile walk one way to the Devils Tower Visitor Center.

Continue straight ahead on the South Side Trail is also how you can hike to the Devils Tower Visitor Center if you want to get in a solid hike!

The Devils Tower Visitor Center is where you can get more up close and personal views of Devils Tower.

And then you will find the start of the Tower Trail at the visitor center. The Tower Trail is THE trail to do if you want to walk around Devils Tower! You will get even closer views of Devils Tower.

5. It’s about a 5-10 minute drive to the start of the Tower Trail.

Otherwise, if you don’t want to walk to the visitor center from the campground, then it’s a 5-10 minute drive to the start of the Tower Trail from the Belle Fourche River campground.

 

 

6. You can look at Devils Tower at night to see if there are rock climbers lighting up the tower!

7. The Devils Tower campground is for tent camping and RV camping.

How to book your campsite at Belle Fourche River Campground

Well… you can’t reserve a campsite for the Devils Tower campground in advance.

As of the 2021 camping season, it was not possible to make reservations for the Belle Fourche River Campground.

The Devils Tower campground is a first-come first-serve campground. So, the only way to get a campsite is to show up to it!

But, this can always change for future seasons, so be sure to confirm this on the National Park Service website or the national park camping reservation website.

 

 

Cost of camping at the Devils Tower campground

The cost of camping at Belle Fourche River campground in Devils Tower National Monument is around $20 per night. See here for updated camping fees.
