ALOHA!

So if you’re looking to visit THE black sand beach on Maui, then that’s on the Road to Hana.

But if you won’t be making the Road to Hana drive

Is there another black sand beach on Maui that’s NOT on the Road to Hana that you can visit instead?!

Well, Oneuli Beach is a beach that is sometimes mentioned as a black sand beach to visit as an alternative to Maui’s most famous black sand beach.

As far as super black colored black sand beaches in Hawaii go, Oneuli Beach isn’t really at the top of the list. (I don’t think so anyway.)

But if you’ve never seen anything close to a black sand beach before, then Oneuli Beach might be the most accessible beach to see black sand if you won’t be doing the Road to Hana.

To me, it looks just kind of black!

If you’d call it black at all

You might even see some red sand too!

You also can get clear views of the other part of Maui!

It’s also said to be a snorkeling spot.

You can try the left side of the beach as you’re facing the ocean, off towards the hill/cliff side.

This beach is located in South Maui, and it’s a pretty easy drive to get to this part of Maui.

If you’re staying in South Maui’s main resort area of Wailea, it’ll be maybe a 10 minute drive.

If you’re staying in West Maui’s main resort area of Kaanapali, then it’ll be about an hour drive.

This is also a quieter beach, and it can be a way to get away from the beach crowds of Wailea or the beach crowds of Kaanapali!

There’s a good chance there will be very few people here.

Can you get to Oneuli Beach by bus?

The nearest bus stop to Oneuli Beach is near the Shops of Wailea.

Oneuli Beach is nearly 4 miles away from the bus stop.

So for most people, this probably isn’t walking distance, and this would mean that you can’t get to Oneuli Beach by bus.

Going to Oneuli Beach

Along with Makena Beach (aka Big Beach), Oneuli Beach is a part of Makena State Park.

But Oneuli Beach in a separate area from its more popular neighbor beach.

There’s no sign that says “Oneuli Beach” leading down to the road of the beach (or I didn’t see one when I went in January 2020), but Google Maps will get you there.

You will see a yellow gate though, and that can be your indication of the street to turn onto.

There’s a self-pay parking fee here that I would think you could use the single pass for both sections of Makena State Park.

Once you turn off the main road, it’s just a couple of minutes until you get to the beach.
