ALOHA!
So as you’re driving around Maui, you might come across a number of “country stores” or “general stores.”
Some of these stores may just sell simple items, and others may sell local products (that can make perfect gifts!) and fresh food too.
As far as Road to Hana stops go for places to eat, the Jaws Country Store can make for a good food stop.
Hawaiian-style poke. Poke is a Hawaiian specialty, and there is also a “Jaws-style poke deluxe” if you want to go for an even more local specialty!
As the Jaws Country Store says:
Enjoy our freshly made food, cold drinks, coffees and espressos, shop Maui-made gifts and merchandise, walk the grounds of our functional farm.
Eat your lunch next to one of the daring big waves surfers fueling up after a session at Jaws.
What is JAWS?!
So the Jaws Country Store is near “Jaws,” which can be a great Road to Hana stop to make… if you’re lucky!
Jaws (aka Peahi) is the location of the famous Jaws surfing competition. Outside of that competition, if the surf conditions are right, it’s also a top spot for high level surfers to catch some world-class (and world-famous) waves.
If there are surfers out, it can make for a great people-watching (surfer-watching!) spot!
How do you know if surfers will be out on the day you do the Road to Hana drive?
When you pass by the road that leads to the Peahi lookout, which is located before the country store when you’re driving towards Hana, if you see that there are tons of cars parked off the Hana Highway, then this is an indication that it can be worth it to stop here. That’s because lots of cars likely means that there’s good surf and surfers are out!
And after you’ve visited Jaws, you can then head to the Jaws Country Store for food!
Outdoor seating
For the restaurant or cafe portion of the Jaws Country Store, there’s a nice outdoor seating area.
And, they do accept credit cards. (Many food stops on the Road to Hana are cash only.)
Local market
There’s also a small little shop located at the Jaws Country Store that sells locally-made items.
So if you want to shop local, this is one spot on the Road to Hana you can do so! (There are many spots, actually, including Hana Farms, another combined food stop + local product shop.)
Location of Jaws Country Store
Jaws Country Store is located “early” as you’re driving towards Hana, before you’d feel like you’ve even really truly gotten started on the Road to Hana.
It is located right off the Hana Highway, so it’ll be visible as you’re driving the road. And you can see the famous Hana Highway when you’re eating, too, as the seating area is basically right along the road.
There’s a mile marker 14 sign post (14.5) right in front of the store. (Although THE “mile marker 0” sign post comes after this as you’re driving towards Hana. Numbers will start getting bigger once you pass the mile mark 0.)
There’s a good-size parking lot at the country store for easy parking.
And you can even get a classic photo here of the surfboards lined up!
Because of the location of the Jaws Country Store, which is earlier on the Road to Hana, it would be a stop to make if as you’re getting started on the Road to Hana, or a stop to make on the way back at the end of your day, depending on the day!
