5 amazing Florida state parks with cabins

Where can you go cabin camping to see the best of the Florida?!

At the bottom you will also find an interactive map with all of the Florida state park cabins!

1. Bahia Honda State Park cabins

best florida state park cabins: bahia honda state park cabin

Proximity to the best of Florida

Bahia Honda State Park to Key West is around a 1 hour drive.

There are no state parks with cabins in Key West.

The Florida state park that is the closest to Key West that has cabins is Bahia Honda State Park!

There is also regular camping in Bahia Honda State Park for tent camping and RV camping.

This might seem a bit of a drive, but it’s still an easy day trip to Key West from Bahia Honda State Park.

And, you don’t have to go to Key West for the best of the Florida Keys, because Bahia Honda State Park is a “best of” on its own!

There are the Bahia Honda beaches which can be for swimming and snorkeling.

Although there’s never any guarantee to see little fishies, I had fun snorkeling experiences in Bahia Honda State Park!

And then directly from Bahia Honda State Park, you might also be able to take a snorkeling tour that goes to one of the best snorkeling spots in the Florida Keys.

That is, a Looe Key snorkeling tour from Bahia Honda State Park! (This does not always run for various reasons, but you can look elsewhere for Looe Key snorkeling tours if you can’t get a Bahia Honda tour.)

You can also go ocean kayaking in Bahia Honda State Park. There are kayak rentals available.

All cabins are waterfront cabins!

There’s the bay right in front of you.

There is no swimming allowed at this bay, but if you look down you might be able to see some little fishies swimming around. In the morning you might also see some big fish jumping out of the water. I don’t know fish, but someone mentioned it’s tarpon.

One of the Bahia Honda State Park campgrounds, Bayside Campground is right in front of you.

Bahia Honda State Park cabins are comfortable cabins with modern amenities.

Bahia Honda State Park is one of the most difficult state parks to find cabin availability for in Florida.

2. Grayton Beach State Park cabins

Proximity to the best of Florida

The Florida 30A Scenic Highway is where you can find a number of smaller beach towns in the Florida Panhandle, located between Destin and Panama City Beach.

You’ll drive the 30A to get to Grayton Beach State Park.

Grayton Beach State Park is one of the best beaches in Florida.

Although really, you can say that about any of the state park beaches in the Florida Panhandle! Because… gulf coast beaches!

The Grayton Beach State Park cabins are located a couple of minutes down the main road from the main area of Grayton Beach State Park.

This means that you’ll have to drive a few minutes to go hiking in Grayton Beach State Park to do the Dune Trail that goes along Western Lake.

But, as a cabin camper, this also means that your beach is not the main Grayton Beach State Park beach.

Instead, you basically have a private beach to share only with your fellow cabin campers! (And anyone else who makes a walk to it from beachside.)

This means that you will never have a crowded beach!

You’ll drive about a minute down the road in your cabin area, and then you’ll walk a boardwalk to the beach.

This boardwalk is only accessible to cabin campers since the cabins are in a gated area.

Grayton Beach State Park cabins are comfortable cabins with modern amenities. You might see deer roaming in your “backyard”!

3. Topsail Hill Preserve State Park cabins and bungalows

Proximity to the best of Florida

Getting to the Topsail Hill State Park beach requires a little bit of extra time… and/or possibly a little bit of extra effort.

There is a paved road of a little less than a mile to get to the beach, but you can’t drive your own car there.

You can walk this road to get to the beach.

If you are bringing your bike along on your Florida cabin trip, then the way you can get to the beach is by biking there. It might be a 10 minute bike ride on a paved road from the Topsail Hill State Park campground.

Otherwise, if you don’t want to walk or bike, there is the Topsail Hill State Park tram that you can take to get to the beach.

There is a tram stop a few minutes walk from the Topsail Hill State Park cabins.

Topsail Hill Preserve State Park has both cabins and bungalows.

There is a difference in price, with the cabins costing more.

The cabins and bungalows are located in the same area, and the difference seems to be the size of the cabin.

Unless you are looking closely, they look the same from the outside… to me anyway! (And I think the only way you’d know the difference if you were looking closely is if you knew what to look for… which I did not. 😂)

The cabins seem to accommodate more people more comfortably than the bungalows.

You can go through the booking process (without any intention of booking) by clicking on a cabin on the map and it will give you details.

Topsail Hill State Park cabins and bungalows are comfortable cabins with modern amenities.

4. Lake Louisa State Park cabins

best florida state parks with cabins: lake louisa state park

Proximity to the best of Florida

Lake Louisa State Park is located in Central Florida.

It’s around a 30 minute drive to Disney World.

Disney World does have their own cabins on-site, called the Fort Wilderness cabins.

But if you want a little bit more of a budget-friendly outdoor stay near Disney World, there are the Lake Louisa State Park cabins!

And, the cabin porches face the water that makes for an epic sunset!

Lake Louisa State Park cabins are comfortable cabins with modern amenities.

You can also go glamping in Lake Louisa State Park… camping in luxury!

5. Oleta River State Park cabins

best florida state parks with cabins: oleta river state park

Proximity to the best of Florida

Oleta River State Park is in North Miami.

If you are looking for Florida state park cabins in South Florida, then there are the Oleta River State Park cabins!

These are lower quality state park cabins, though!

Oleta River State Park cabins are rustic cabins. In this case, this means that you need to bring your own bedding (sheets, blankets, pillows, etc) and the cabin is basically just a place to sleep.

There are shared bathrooms and showers, and they aren’t great. I’ve stayed at a lot of Florida state park campgrounds which have good bathroom facilities, but the Oleta River State Park bathrooms don’t meet the standards of regular state park campgrounds.

They are usable, so just as long as you don’t have high expectations, they are fine!

How to make Florida state park cabin reservations

The way to make Florida state park cabin reservations is through the official Florida state parks camping reservations website.

And… good luck! 😜

Many, if not most, of the best cabins in Florida state parks are difficult to find cabin availability.

As it goes for Florida state park camping in general (consider that you are doing a form of cabin camping!), some campgrounds get completely booked up 11 months in advance, right when the campsites become available for booking. The same probably goes for some in-demand cabins!

But not all cabins are like that, so it’s possible you might be able to find cabin availability here and there.

You’ll have a better time if your dates are flexible.

Also, people cancel their cabin reservations. More cancellations will start to occur the closer you get to your date.

Cabins have a 2-night minimum.

Tips for looking for your perfect Florida state park cabin

There are cabins in Florida state parks that have springs (Fanning Springs State Park), manatees in winter (Blue Spring State Park), alligators (Myakka River State Park), beaches (Grayton Beach State Park), snorkeling (Bahia Honda State Park), shelling (Cayo Costa State Park), boat tours (Silver Springs State Park), trails (basically every state park!), and more!

Staying at a Cayo Costa State Park cabin feels like you’re staying on a quiet private island, but unfortunately as of the end of 2023, the island is still is inaccessible to most people after it was basically where the destructive hurricane of September 2022 made landfall. (You can go if you have your own boat.) Check the Florida Park Service for updates.

If you’re making it a tent camping trip around Florida, staying in cabins can make for a great “break” too, allowing you to still feel like it’s an outdoors stay, but with a few extra comforts!

And there are a lot of comforts in most Florida state park cabins!

The types of cabins in Florida state parks can vary by state park, so you will want to be sure you understand what is included and what is not to avoid disappointment!

But there are many state park cabins that offer you the comforts of home including kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms complete with bedding, living spaces with couches, and a screened porch so you can sit outside without being bothered by bugs! These types of modern cabins also have AC and heat. (Lake Louisa State Park)

On the flip side, there are also rustic camping cabins that give you more of an outdoors feel. For these types of cabins, you need to provide your own bedding (mattress only provided) and you need to walk to a shared bathroom. These types of rustic camping cabins don’t have AC or heat. (Oleta River State Park)

ALL Florida state parks have minimal housekeeping, though!

And by minimal housekeeping, it basically means, treat it like you’re staying at your friend’s house!

You want to basically leave the cabin the way you found it. You are also expected to take out trash to the designated area for example.

No matter what, with a Florida state park cabin stay, you will get to stay in an outdoor setting surrounded by nature!
