A bit more below on each of these waterfalls, including some more pictures of each of the hiking trails!

But first…

More about the Smokies:

And…

How hard are waterfall hikes in the Smoky Mountains?!

And what to wear for waterfall hiking in the Smokies

Hiking to waterfalls in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. What to wear waterfall hiking in the smoky mountains. What to pack for smoky mountains vacation. Smokies travel blog

Almost all of the best waterfall hikes in the Smoky Mountains have HILLS! They are quite literally in the mountains and you are often going UP to see the waterfalls. Most of these hikes require some level of effort. Consider the waterfalls your reward!

So if you are looking to do some hiking to see waterfalls in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it is best to be prepared with hiking essentials for the Smoky Mountains

At minimum, this includes bringing along a daypack on your hike that includes WATER and SNACKS.

It would be even better (and highly recommended!) if you are also wearing appropriate shoes.

What are appropriate shoes?!

Hiking shoes would be GREAT.

A lot of the trails in the Smoky Mountains are rocky, and among other things, hiking shoes will have thicker soles than your normal shoes. This means hiking shoes will be better suited for the rugged terrain and you won’t feel those rocks as much on the bottom of your feet as you’re walking.

Waterfall hikes in the Smokies may also have small water crossings, and the slightly water resistant nature of hiking shoes can be helpful too.

Your shoes (and socks!) have a better chance of remaining dry at the end of the day so your shoes can be ready for the next day’s hike! (And you don’t have to worry about drying them!)

It would also be even better (and once again highly recommended!) to bring along hiking poles!

Because most of these waterfall hikes have hills, you will be going up and down a lot.

You will likely be VERY happy to have hiking poles for almost all of these hikes! Hiking poles will make it feel easier to go up, and they can help to relieve stress on your knees going down.

These are just a few things to start thinking about for hiking to waterfalls in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. See more about what to pack for your Great Smoky Mountains National Park vacation!

Be an even more prepared hiker by having a look at these safety tips for waterfall hikes too!

Download offline maps before you go!

Phone service as you are driving through the national park can be almost nonexistent. So it will be helpful to download (free!) offline google maps of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the surrounding area before you go to help you navigate your way through the national park to the waterfalls. You can expect phone service and data in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and other cities outside of the park.

No dogs on waterfall hikes in the Smoky Mountains

Are dogs allowed on waterfall hiking trails in Great Smoky Mountains National Park? Pet-friendly hiking trails in Smoky Mountains. smokies travel blog

In general, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is not a pet-friendly park when it comes to hiking. Dogs are not allowed on the vast majority of hiking trails in the Smoky Mountains, and that includes the waterfall hikes on this list.

Please, don’t be THAT person.

And if you’re tempted to be that person, please see the list of reasons why dogs are better off away from the trails in the Smokies.

And now…

A little bit more about some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Smoky Mountains!

I did these hiking trails in September and October 2020, and they were OPEN!

Once again, the drive time from Gatlinburg may vary based on traffic, so it’s best to give extra time for that. It’s also best to allow extra time for parking, in particular for the popular waterfalls.

How much time a hike might take is also listed, but this can also vary based on your fitness level, how many stops you make along the way, and how long you spend at the waterfalls! Bring a light picnic lunch and you’ll be able to find a rock to sit on near most waterfalls so you can eat with a view!

Best shoes for hiking in the Smoky Mountains

You will want good shoes for hiking in the Smoky Mountains.

In general, the best shoes for hiking in the Smoky Mountains will be hiking boots (more ideal) or trail running shoes (more versatile for everyday activities compared to hiking boots but still will give you advantages compared to regular shoes).

I liked wearing my hiking boots for the thicker soles (good on rocky trails) and the waterproof (water resistant) nature of them.

They were especially helpful on rainy day hikes to keep my shoes (and socks!) dry! They are also better to be walking on mud compared to regular shoes.

On rougher terrain (like the trails that are a bit rougher with more rocks), hiking boots are more ideal so you won't feel it on the bottoms of your feet as much.

If you want shoes that can work out better as everyday "out and about" kind of shoes, then you might like trail running shoes better! Trail running shoes are a little more durable than regular shoes, so they can also work out as good hiking shoes. Trail running shoes are a bit lighter weight and less bulky compared to hiking boots.

Shoe fit is very important for your feet! Be sure to break in your new shoes by walking around the neighborhood and/or at the grocery store before you go on your "big hike" in the Smoky Mountains!

Shop for hiking boots: Merrell is popular and known as a good quality outdoor shoe brand for hiking

Shop for trail running shoes: Salomon is popular and known as a good quality outdoor shoe brand for trail running
