If you’re driving I-90 nearly entirely across South Dakota and you’re looking for worthy place to stop and stretch your legs, there is the Dignity Statue that is located just off of I-90 that can make for a perfect stop!

It’s a statue of a Native American woman representing the Lakota culture.

It’s Dignity of Earth and Sky!

The Dignity Statue is at an actual rest area along I-90.

The Dignity Statue is located between exit 263 and exit 265.

As you are driving, you’ll also see the signs for the Dignity Statue. This is the same rest area as the Lewis and Clark Welcome Center and Lewis and Clark exhibits.

I was driving I-90 west from a Palisades State Park camping cabin in eastern South Dakota.

And then eventually you will pass exit 265, and that means you’ll be approaching the Dignity Statue rest area.

 

 

And then you will drive into the rest area.

 

 

You will start to see the Dignity Statue as you are driving in.

 

 

So you can see the Dignity Statue from the road that goes through the rest area.

You don’t even need to get out of the car to get a glimpse of her.

But of course, you might want to get an up close look at Dignity of earth and sky!

 

 

If you do, be sure to go behind her too to see the back of the Dignity Statue!

 

 

Also behind the Dignity Statue is the walking path if you want to stretch your legs even more.

 

 

You can also make the Dignity Statue rest area a picnic stop.

There are picnic tables at the rest area, some that come with views of Dignity!

 

 

 

Lewis and Clark Welcome Center

 

The Dignity Statue rest area is also the Lewis and Clark Welcome Center.

And yes, you can make this rest area stop about the Lewis and Clark expedition that you read about in grade school history books too! You can learn more about Lewis and Clark in South Dakota.

There is a little museum (exhibit) in a building near the Dignity Statue.

 

 

Near the Dignity Statue, there is also a marker signifying 200 years since the Lewis and Clark expedition:

The Corps of Discovery II marker commemorates the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition.

 

 

 

How far is Dignity Statue from Mount Rushmore?

Mount Rushmore to the Dignity Statue is around a 3.5 hour drive.

On the way to the Dignity Statue when you are driving from Mount Rushmore are places like Badlands National Park and Wall Drug. These places are also located off of I-90.

From Wall Drug and Badlands National Park to the Dignity Statue is around a 2.5 hour drive, maybe less.

 

 

Back to I-90

And then once you’ve taken in all that you want to at the Lewis and Clark Welcome Center, you can get back on the road to continue your drive on I-90!

 

 

If you’re heading west, you will continue to see a ton of Wall Drug signs!

 

 

If you’re heading east, you might want to make an overnight stop in eastern South Dakota at the Palisades State Park camping cabins!
