You can consider this a short hike in the Black Hills near Mount Rushmore.
Or you could stay a little while longer to make use of the Breezy Point picnic area.
You can add a visit to Breezy Point alongside your drive through Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
If you leave Mount Rushmore by driving to the west, then Mount Rushmore National Memorial is connected to Black Hills National Forest.
Driving to the west would also be the direction of the quickest way to Sylvan Lake, the iconic Needles Highway tunnel, and some of the best hikes in Custer State Park.
And it is shortly after you enter Black Hills National Forest on this side that you will find Breezy Point!

Getting to Breezy Point in Black Hills National Forest
So driving west out of Mount Rushmore National Memorial, you’ll drive right into Black Hills National Forest.
And then you’ll almost immediately pass the Wrinkled Rock Climbing Area of Black Hills National Forest, and then shortly after that you will see a sign for the Breezy Point picnic area. The Breezy Point picnic area is where you will find the trail to the Breezy Point Overlook!

For google maps, you can make the Breezy Point picnic area your destination. From the Mount Rushmore parking lot to Breezy Point is around a 10 minute drive. When driving in this direction, you will also pass by a spot to see the profile view of George Washington on Mount Rushmore.







And then it’ll be a short road to the Breezy Point picnic area.


There is a basic toilet at the Breezy Point parking lot.

Then you can walk around a little bit to see picnic tables in the immediate area.




From the parking lot, you’ll also see a trail, and that’s the trail to the Breezy Point overlook.


You’ll shortly come to a trail junction.

There is a small scenic overlook off it the right, and you can also find another picnic spot.




Then you’ll head back to the trail junction to see the views at the other overlook!
