Hi there!
So you’re off to drive to Clingmans Dome that is among the best things to do in Great Smoky Mountains National Park!
The Clingmans Dome parking lot is located at the end of Clingmans Dome Road.
This means it’s not difficult to get to the Clingmans Dome trailhead.
Once you are on Newfound Gap Road, there will be signs for Clingmans Dome, and then you will just keep driving until the very end of the road!
Newfound Gap Road is a popular road that goes through Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
I went to Clingmans Dome in September. What the weather will be like from year to year can vary (which means the colors can vary!), but this is what it was like for me!
And…
There are grand mountain views to be seen directly from the Clingmans Dome parking lot!
So no hiking necessary to see scenic mountain views when you drive to the end of Clingmans Dome Road.

I use hotels.com to look for the cheapest hotels. You can also try the expedia hotels site (good for car rentals too) or see if you like any of the vrbo vacation rentals or cabins.

But if you are up for some hiking, then from the parking lot, you can hike the Clingmans Dome Trail.
This will take you to the Clingmans Dome summit which is the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
This is where you’ll find the famous observation tower of the Smoky Mountains. It’s also one of the best hikes in the Smoky Mountains!
More below on getting to the start of the Clingmans Dome Trail!
⛰🐻
How to get to the Clingmans Dome parking lot
So the Clingmans Dome Trail is one of the great hikes that can be accessed from driving Newfound Gap Road.
This means that it’s really not difficult to find the way to Clingmans Dome.
Newfound Gap Road is the main scenic road that runs through Great Smoky Mountains National Park from north to south, from Tennessee to North Carolina. This is among the most popular scenic drives in the park.
Basically, all you need to do to get to the Clingmans Dome parking lot is to get yourself to Newfound Gap Road and keep driving until you see the sign for Clingmans Dome!
Your destination for google maps can be the Clingmans Dome trailhead, Clingmans Dome parking area, or Clingmans Dome Visitor Center. Take your pick!
You may want to download offline google maps before you go (it’s free), as you may not have signal in the park.
Otherwise, even without google maps, you will be able to get there just fine because again, you just follow Newfound Gap Road until you see the Clingmans Dome sign. Google maps would be helpful to ease your mind so you’ll know when you’re getting closer.
Driving directly from Gatlinburg to Clingmans Dome, it might take around 50 minutes to drive, if you don’t stop and if you don’t encounter a lot of traffic. You’ll likely want to allow some extra time, for traffic, for parking, and because you might want to make some stops along the way!
See things to do on your drive from Gatlinburg.
If you’re coming from Gatlinburg, you’ll pass by some overlooks and some popular trailheads where you may see parking on the side of the road (like for the Alum Cave trailhead or Chimney Tops trailhead).
The turn-off onto Clingmans Dome Road will be shortly after the big Newfound Gap overlook parking lot.
So after you pass Newfound Gap, you’ll look for the Clingmans Dome sign. This will direct you to turn onto Clingmans Dome Road.
Then you’ll take the road to drive up (and it will be UP) around 7 miles to the very end of the road!
And the end of Clingmans Dome Road is the Clingmans Dome parking lot!
And there are those MOUNTAIN VIEWS from the parking lot!
If there’s good weather with clear skies, expect a full parking lot.
Even if there’s cloudy weather, there may be a full parking lot!
Because Clingmans Dome is one of the most popular activities of the Smoky Mountains, there’s a good chance there will be lots of cars.
This is especially true if there’s good weather. Good weather means good views! Overcast weather means little to NO views! See the difference Clingmans Dome weather can make for the views!
If the parking lot is full, you’ll start looking for parking spots on gravel off the side of the road. This may be another thing to add in extra time for, as you might have to walk a little bit extra just to get to the parking lot.
There is a bathroom at the Clingmans Dome parking lot. (Good chance of a line.)
And then once you’ve taken in the views from the Clingmans Dome parking lot, you can make your way to the start of the Clingmans Dome Trail. That will take you to the highest point in the Smoky Mountains!
You’ll see the Clingmans Dome Visitor Center (one of the visitor centers of Great Smoky Mountains National Park) on the right side just a little after you start the Clingmans’ Dome Trail.
After you get back to the parking lot, you can also hike the Forney Ridge Trail to go to Andrews Bald for more mountain views!

And finally…
Clingmans Dome Road is closed in winter
And that’s a bit about getting to the Clingmans Dome parking lot to start the hike to the Clingmans Dome summit!
