What to know about Whirlpool rapids scenic overlook in Niagara Falls New York

If you’ll be in Niagara Falls NY, you’ll also want to get in a Niagara Gorge activity for a well-rounded Niagara Falls experience!

And one quick Niagara Gorge activity you can do is at Whirlpool State Park.

There’s a great scenic overlook at Whirlpool State Park where you can see the “whirlpool rapids” area of the Niagara River.

It’s Whirlpool Point!

There are actually many scenic overlooks in Whirlpool State Park.

You’ll find these scenic overlooks along the Niagara Gorge Rim Trail.

The Niagara Gorge Rim Trail of New York runs along the “top” or “rim” of the Niagara Gorge for around 6 miles.

Part of this trail also runs through Whirlpool State Park.

And it’s along here that you’ll find an overlook to see what’s called the whirlpool rapids of the Niagara River.

Trail to the Whirlpool scenic overlook!

The trail to the Whirlpool scenic overlook (and Niagara Gorge Trail) is behind the building you’ll see when you arrive at the parking lot. This building has bathrooms. It also has a small museum where you can learn about the geology and history of the Niagara Gorge.

 

 

On the other side of the building is where you’ll find the path that will lead to the overlook along the Niagara Gorge Rim Trail.

You can follow the signs to the scenic overlook! The whirlpool overlook is more so off to the left.

Off to the far right is the direction you want to go to get to the Niagara Gorge stairs to get down closer to river level aka the Whirlpool Rapids Trail.

And off to see the whirlpool and the Niagara River you go! You’ll be there in about a minute or less!

 

 

And then once you’ve finished taking in the views at the main scenic overlook spot, you can head further along on the Niagara Gorge Rim Trail!

Or you can just head back!

 

 

 

Parking for the Whirlpool Point scenic overlook trail

You will go to Whirlpool State Park for the Whirlpool scenic overlook trail.

Whirlpool State Park is about a 10 minute drive from Niagara Falls State Park (where you’ll find scenic views from spots like Terrapin Point and Three Sisters Islands).

 

 

There is a pretty big parking lot.

 

 

It’s free to enter Whirlpool State Park, and it’s free to park at Whirlpool State Park. So seeing the whirlpool from the scenic overlook is a FREE activity you can do while you’re in Niagara Falls NY!

 

 

Discover Niagara shuttle stop at Whirlpool State Park

 

The Discover Niagara shuttle is a FREE shuttle that goes to many tourist spots around Niagara Falls NY.

There is a Discover Niagara shuttle stop at Whirlpool State Park.

 

 

And since there’s free parking here, this is one of the spots that you may choose to get on the Discover Niagara shuttle at to go elsewhere too.
