Hi there!
So you’re headed to Niagara Falls!
If you’re planning a Niagara Falls activity where you’ll quite literally be under the waterfalls, like Maid of the Mist or Cave of the Winds, then you will want to be sure waterproof your phone in some way so you can get some epic photos while you’re getting wet under the waterfalls!
I have used a cheap waterproof phone case to take underwater pictures (and video!) when snorkeling, and I ended up using the same waterproof phone case for Niagara Falls too.
It works well for taking pictures underwater, and it can work well for taking pictures above water for waterfalls too!

This is more like a soft case pouch that you slide your phone into, and then you close it off to keep the water out.
It’s not an exact fit to your phone like better quality $$$ phone cases specific to your phone type would be.
It has been called a waterproof phone case, waterproof phone pouch, and a cell phone dry bag.
If you’re not picky and incredibly technical about your picture quality, and you can make some compromises (like having to wipe away the occasional water droplets on the case, a bit more on this below), then you will likely be quite happy with this CHEAP option of making your phone into an under-the-falls camera!
🌊
Pictures below were taken with phone at Cave of the Winds of Niagara Falls NY while in a cheapo waterproof phone case.
You are making your phone into an waterproof camera for waterfalls!
Actual picture quality will be better for you since these pictures below have been formatted for the web! (aka they are reduced quality for web.)
In any case, a cheap waterproof phone case can work out just fine! Well, except for the part that you’re getting sprayed by waterfalls which means your phone is getting sprayed by waterfalls!

There are a few important things to know about getting a cheap waterproof phone pouch
1. It IS a CHEAP waterproof phone case!
So, keep your expectations in check! Of course, getting a real $$$ waterproof camera or a waterproof phone case fit for your phone will offer you better quality, and better convenience for taking pictures.
2. The touchscreen doesn’t work when wet.
The touchscreen works just fine through the phone case… if the case is dry. Because of the material of the case, most of the water does repel, keeping it “dry.”
But if your phone is quite literally being sprayed with a TON of water, it may take a couple of clicks for you to actually snap the picture. This mostly is not a big deal.
3. There may be water droplets left on the phone case, which can obscure pictures.

While the phone pouch repels water that hits it, what can be left is little droplets.
These water droplets may end up on your phone case in the exact spot that your camera lens is!
Then, you won’t get the picture you want! This may be kind of a big deal!

But it doesn’t have to be a big deal… if you remember to wipe off your screen now and then! A simple wipe with the hand will work to clear the camera lens to be able to take the picture you want.

4. You may not see exactly what you’re taking a picture of.
Because of the lighting, reflection caused by the phone case material, and constant spray of waterfalls (or something like that), you may not actually get a good look on your phone of what you’re taking a picture of.

I was often holding my phone in the general direction of what I wanted to take a picture of, and hoped for the best! 😜
5. You will want to be sure to hold on to your phone tight!
The wind can be STRONG under the waterfalls!

So you will want to be sure that your phone doesn’t go flying away because of the wind. Be sure to keep a very good hold of it!
Most waterproof phone cases do come with a lanyard so that you can put it around your neck which will likely prevent you from completely dropping the phone on the ground… or worse, falling below the stairway or deck and be lost for good.
6. Because it’s a soft case, you’ll want to be careful about how you pack it.
Being a soft case means that it’s easy for the phone pouch to get bent up. So ideally you won’t want to just shove it in your daypack. Placing it in a book, magazine, or notebook can help to keep it straight. Or you could just keep your phone in it!
7. Test it out at home before you use for real!
It will be a good idea to test the waterproof phone pouch at home like in your sink or bathtub, just in case!
8. And once again… keep your expectations in check to avoid disappointment! There may be some photo fails.
It’s possible to take worthy pictures with your phone inside a cheap waterproof phone case.
But, you may also have some photo fails, courtesy of your phone being in a plastic pouch that gets wet.
So just know that while you can take some good pictures under waterfalls with a waterproof phone case, it’s not perfect.
Take lots of pictures everywhere to increase your chance of getting good pictures! 😜
ALL THAT SAID…
If you can work with all these things, then…

If you have a bigger phone, be sure to check that your phone size will fit.
Depending on what color phone pouch you choose, there’s a $1-2 difference.
