Father Marquette was famous for being a missionary explorer around Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River Valley.

There is a national memorial in Michigan to honor Father Jacques Marquette!

It’s called the Father Marquette National Memorial.

To visit the Father Marquette National Memorial, you will go to Straits State Park in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, just across the Mackinac Bridge when you are coming from the lower peninsula.

According to Michigan State Parks, Father Jacques Marquette was considered a “missionary explorer.” Also:

In 1675, Marquette and Louis Jolliet departed St Ignace on a 3,000 mile trip to explore and map Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River Valley.

Marquette’s map was the most accurate then known.

Marquette stands as one of Michigan’s greatest men and the memorial honors him and his achievements.

So Father Marquette is considered to be an important part of Michigan history, along with the Great Lakes region in general.

This is in a separate area from the most of Straits State Park, including the Straits State Park campground.
