ALOHA!
So the beach at Honomanu Bay isn’t THE famous black sand beach on the Road to Hana.
But it is the second-most known (but still really not known much) black sand beach on the Road to Hana.
If you are looking for a quiet stop on the Road to Hana that has the added bonus of being a kind of black sand beach, then you just might like this beach! It’s the “other” black sand beach on the Road to Hana.

Honomanu Bay isn’t directly off the Hana Highway, and there are no signs to it.
So it generally won’t have as many people as other more easily-accessible and more popular stops.
You could even call it a bit of a hidden beach on Maui.
It requires a walk or drive on a kind of rough road to get to the beach once you turn off the Hana Highway.
It’s generally not recommended to drive the road to the beach unless you have a jeep or 4wd vehicle because it’s possible that the road conditions won’t be ideal. But this does depend on the conditions of the day, as normal vehicles have done the drive too.

If you’re not driving directly to the beach, you can park on the side of the road off of the Hana Highway and then walk the rest of the way.
It’s a pretty short walk of about 5-10 minutes, so it’s also not unreasonable to just park and walk! You can consider it a way to stretch your legs a bit on a day when there’s a lot of sitting and driving involved.
Parking location for walking to Honomanu Bay
To locate the road to Honomanu Bay on google maps, you can find the icon that’s labeled as “Honomanu.” And then from there, you can see the road that connects to the Hana Highway.
You can zoom out on the map below to get a better idea of where it’s located on the Road to Hana.
Again, there’s no sign post telling you you’re near Honomanu Bay, but if you follow along with GPS on google maps, you’ll likely have no issues finding the road that leads down to the black sand beach!

Right by this road there’s limited shoulder area along the highway that you can use for parking.

And then after you’ve parked…
Start the walk to the black sand beach!
You’ll pass by a small patch of bamboo trees too.

And then…
Arrive at the Honomanu Bay black sand beach!
Okay, so initially it didn’t seem like much of a black sand beach to me. I guess having visited many super black black sand beaches on the Big Island, I have high expectations of “black sand” beaches. 😉
The Honomanu Bay beach seemed more like a grey sand beach and a rocky beach.

But if you hunt for it a little bit, you’ll find what makes Honomanu Bay to be called a black sand beach too! (Maybe with a little assistance from it being wet sand.)

In any case, a visit to this beach can be a nice little way to take a break from driving to a spot that will likely have few people!
And that’s a bit about one black sand beach on the Road to Hana!
If you’re interested in black sand beaches, then definitely don’t miss the famous black sand beach in Maui – that one is for sure worth it! And then there are a few more kind of black sand beaches on Maui.
And the Big Island has the best black sand beaches worth visiting too!
