Hi there!
Sandspur Campground is in Bahia Honda State Park.
Sandspur Campground was considered one of the best campgrounds in the Florida Keys for tent camping and RV camping.
But then in 2017, a hurricane happened.
According to Florida state parks:
In September of 2017, Hurricane Irma struck the Florida Keys.
The category 4 hurricane did more than just topple trees.
Buildings were flattened, and much of the beach’s sand was displaced and campsites were buried in debris.
When the storm passed, park staff, the community and emergency officials came together to help free trapped citizens and clear the wreckage.
This hurricane also resulted in the destruction of Sandspur Campground.
This meant that you could no longer stay at Sandspur Campground.
And Sandspur Campground remained closed for years until spring 2022.
According to Florida State Parks, there are several Florida state park campgrounds that have been damaged by a hurricane in the past:
- Sandspur Campground
- Long Key State Park campground
- St Andrews State Park campground
- Florida Caverns State Park campground
- St. Joseph Peninsula State Park campground
As of May 2022, Sandspur Campground is open.
In May 2022, Sandspur Campground reopened after it was closed for years due to hurricane damage.
Sandspur Campground just may go back to being one of the best campgrounds in the Florida Keys!

👆 Sandspur Campground is open in May 2022. This is the new campsite #50 at Sandspur Campground. This is oceanfront camping in the Florida Keys.

Sandspur Beach also reopened in May 2022.

How do you reserve a campsite at Sandpur Campground?
You reserve a campsite at Sandspur Campground through the official Florida state parks reservations website.
Finding open campsite availability at Sandspur Campground is known to be difficult.
But don’t worry, not all hope is lost if you aren’t capable of planning that far in advance. (And even if you were, it’s also known to be difficult. Reports indicate campsites can get snatched up within the first 5 minutes… or less!)
If your hopeful Sandspur Campground trip is just a few months, weeks, or even days away, cancellations do happen.
You just have to get lucky and search for campgrounds immediately after someone cancels.
Your “luck” will increase the more you search, and the closer you are to your travel date.
Searching over and over (and over 😜) does really work.
While it’s not something to necessarily depend on, it’s something you can look for.
1 night stays will generally be easier to find than multi-night stays.
In general, you will find the greatest difficulty in finding open availability for Saturday nights.

Here are some pictures from the NEW Sandspur Campground
I was staying at another one of the nearby campgrounds when Sandspur Beach opened.
There are some campsites of Sandspur Campground that are on the way to Sandspur Beach, so I stopped by to take some pictures of some of the oceanfront Sandspur campsites!

👆 This is the new campsite #49 at Sandspur Campground. This is oceanfront camping!

👆 The road through Sandspur Campground is not suitable for large RVs. The Sandspur Campground campsites allow tents, regular vans, pop-ups, and trailers no more than 23 feet long.

Sandspur Campground has electricity and water.

There is water at each individual campsite.

There is electricity at the campsite.

There are regular bathrooms with hot water showers at the Sandspur Campground.
More about Sandspur Campground
See more about camping at Sandspur Campground from the Florida Park Service:
Sandspur Campground (sites 49 to 72) accommodates a variety of camping rigs.
The sites are gravel and have electricity, water, picnic tables and grills.
Maximum rig length is 23 feet.
Larger camping rigs cannot navigate the sharp turns in this camping loop.
Last checked: Florida State Parks, July 2022. Also note on this same page it says Sandspur Campground is closed. But, if you go to the reservations website, you can see campsite availability for Sandspur Campground, which would indicate it’s open.

👆 If you want to stay at Sandpur Campground, search for the state park on the reservations website, and then look for SSC. SSC = Sandspur Campground! P.S. I don’t think the “notify me” works very well because it doesn’t seem to be an instant notification. Instead they notify you always at 7am or something. So you are better off searching throughout the day. It seems like it would be rare for a campsite to remain open for very long! But of course you can try it and see how it is.
And that’s a bit about Sandspur Campground!
