If you’re look for a quiet activity in Juneau, Savikko Park can be a perfect way to spend an hour or more in Juneau.
Savikko Park is on Douglas Island, which is across the bridge from “mainland” Juneau.
Savikko Park was a pleasant surprise for me.
I was actually looking for where to go to see totem poles in Juneau when I came across Savikko Park.
I went to Savikko Park for the totem pole, but what made it worth it to me was the walk along the beach at Savikko Park!
It seemed like it was low tide, and there were jellyfish washed up on the beach!

This is the area where cruise ships come through to get to Juneau cruise port, and I saw a couple of cruise ship sailing by too.
I walked for a bit along the shoreline before turning around.
Also at Savikko Park is the Treadwell Mine Historic Site where you can learn about the gold mining history of Juneau.

2. Wolf totem pole
When you arrive at Savikko Park, you’ll immediately see a big totem pole at the parking lot.
3. Treadwell pump house
The Treadwell pump house is one of the ruins that remain from what is said to be the largest operating hard rock gold mine in the world at the time of its operation.
This is the obvious building that you will see along the shoreline when you are at Sandy Beach.
If you are arriving to Juneau by cruise ship, you will also be able to see this as you are sailing in to Juneau cruise port.
As you are approaching the Juneau cruise port in the Gastineau Channel, you will want to be on the LEFT side of the ship (aka port side) so you can see the Treadwell pump house.
This means that when you are sailing away from Juneau cruise, you will want to be on the RIGHT side of the ship (aka starboard side) so you can see it.
The Treadwell pump house is a part of the Treadwell Mine Historic Site.
4. Treadwell Mine Historic Site
The Treadwell Mine Historic Site is at Savikko Park.
It was created so you can learn more about the gold mining history in Juneau.
You can see an old mill at the Treadwell Mine Historic Site at the start of the Treadwell Trail.
This five-stamp mill at the Treadmill Mine in Douglas is said to have produced a total of $10,902 worth of gold.

If you’re driving to Savikko Park and Sandy Beach, there is a parking lot.
How to get to Savikko Park from Juneau cruise port
Savikko Park is one of the things you can do in Juneau from the cruise ship on your own.
There is a bus that goes to Douglas Island and Savikko Park.
There is a bus stop in downtown Juneau, which may be around a 15 minute walk from your cruise ship, possibly less depending on where you cruise ship is docked.
What I did on the day I went to Savikko Park
I arrived to Juneau by cruise ship.
As I walked off the cruise ship, I realized that the only way I would make the next bus to Douglas Island is if I ran.
So I literally ran to the bus stop along the boardwalk from the cruise ship. ðĪĢ
All that running paid off, because I made it just before it left!
And then, I followed along on google maps using gps and got off the bus at the bus stop near Savikko Park!
Then I walked around Savikko Park for a little bit.
When I arrived it wasn’t raining, but it did start raining while I was there.
Walking along the beach, it was rainy and windy!
I walked back to the bus stop, and waited for the bus to come.
Instead of taking the bus back to downtown Juneau, I got off at the bus stop right before the bridge so that I could walk across the Douglas Island bridge.
It was soooooooo windy on the bridge, but you will get great views of the Gastineau Channel and cruise ships!
Then, I continued walking across the bridge, and next I went to Overstreet Park to see totem poles and the big whale statue.
From there, it’s a walk back to downtown Juneau.
I ended up stopping by the Sealaska Heritage museum which is a spot you can learn about the Native Alaskan culture.
Continuing the walk back to the cruise ship, you will naturally be on the Totem Trail of downtown Juneau to see totem poles along the boardwalk!
Basically you will see the totem poles as soon as you get off the cruise ship.
